Sergeant Basil Kinton

Sergeant Basil Kinton enlisted as a civilian into the Royal Air Force and subsequently became a Sergeant and served with the 83 Squadron.

On the evening of July 7th 1940, Basil was a member of crew on board aircraft L4066 a Handley Page Hampden MkI.  Airborne from RAF Scampton, Lincolnshire, a force of 18 Hampdens, 12 Whitleys and 12 Wellingtons were tasked with raids over Germany.  The targets were Frankfurt, Soest, Duisberg and Dormund-Ems.

L4066 was assigned to bomb Frankfurt, with Dortmund as the secondary target.   On the outbound leg from RAF Scampton, Hampden L4066 crashed between Great Holland and Frinton-on-Sea.   All four crew on board were killed.  Their bodies were recovered and buried in cemeteries local to their families.

He is buried in grave number Y23 in Priory Road Cemetery.
