Lance Corporal Ernest Mallett

Lance Corporal Ernest Mallett was born in Huntingdon in 1883 to William and Harriett Mallet. He was the youngest of 12 children. He became a soldier in 1901 and was posted to District Shorncliffe Camp in Cheriton and Sandgate, Kent.

He married Hilda of Buckden, Huntingdonshire in 1910. In 1911, they were living in Huntingdon and Ernest was working as a Railway Drayman.

Ernest joined the 5th Dragoon Guards (Princess Charlotte of Wales’s) and was stationed at Aldershot in Hampshire when Britain declared war on Germany in 1914. During WWI, the 5th Dragoon Guards served on the Western Front as part of the 1st Cavalry Brigade (which was re-named the 1st Cavalry Division in September 1914) for the duration of the war.

Ernest died of wounds sustained in the First World War on 16th June 1915, aged 33 and is buried in grave number R35 in Priory Road Cemetery, Huntingdon.
